The 16-marker: knowledge is only half the marks

The 16-mark essay splits evenly: 8 marks for accurate, relevant knowledge (AO1) and 8 for analysis and explanation (AO2), plus 4 SPaG marks. Students who “know loads” but describe rather than argue cap themselves at half marks.

Where the marks come from

AO1 — Knowledge & understanding (8 marks)

Detailed, accurate, relevant knowledge — precise dates, names and events deployed to serve the argument, not decorate it.

AO2 — Explanation & analysis (8 marks)

Convincing, sustained analysis: every paragraph explains how its evidence answers the question, and the essay reaches a supported judgement.

The level ladder

Level 413–16Convincing, sustained argument; detailed accurate knowledge; complex thinking about the question.
Level 39–12Developed reasoning; generally accurate and relevant knowledge.
Level 25–8Some analysis; some relevant knowledge; partly descriptive.
Level 11–4Simple explanation; limited knowledge.

How to move up a band

1Answer the question in your first sentence — a thesis, not background. “The main reason was X, although Y mattered because…”
2End every paragraph by linking back: “this meant that…” forces analysis over description.
3Use precise evidence — “unemployment reached 6 million by 1932” does AO1 work that “many people were unemployed” cannot.
4Weigh factors against each other, don’t just list them; “more significant than” is Level 4 language.
5Leave two minutes for SPaG — 4 marks ride on it.
