Creative writing: where the 40 marks actually go

Question 5 is half your Paper 1 mark — 24 marks for content and organisation (AO5) and 16 for technical accuracy (AO6). The difference between Level 3 and Level 5 is rarely imagination; it’s control.

Where the marks come from

AO5 — Content & organisation (24 marks)

Top band is “compelling and convincing”: deliberate structure, imaginative but controlled ideas, and vocabulary chosen for effect rather than to impress.

AO6 — Technical accuracy (16 marks)

Top band means ambitious vocabulary used correctly and varied, inventive punctuation and sentence forms — a semicolon used well beats three used badly.

The level ladder

Level 634–40Compelling, convincing, crafted. Extensive ambitious vocabulary; inventive sentence forms.
Level 527–33Increasingly sophisticated; structural choices create deliberate effects.
Level 420–26Engaging, varied vocabulary; a range of structural features; generally accurate.
Level 313–19Clear and consistent; appropriate vocabulary; structure evident.

How to move up a band

1Plan a shape before you write: a narrowing focus, a flashback loop, a repeated image. Structure is the fastest route to Level 5 in AO5.
2Slow down time at the key moment — one paragraph of close sensory detail beats three of plot.
3Cut your opening line of throat-clearing; start inside the scene.
4Vary sentence lengths on purpose. A three-word sentence after two long ones is a structural feature examiners can credit.
5Save five minutes to proofread — AO6 is 16 marks and most of its losses are fixable errors.
